GBF Panel discussion on stage at Gracie Barra Leader Con 2026

Our GBF Professors on stage at Leader Con, answering the question this class grew out of.

It Started With One Question On A Panel

"When you first started training or teaching, what was the female presence like in the school, and what made you realise that women needed a more intentional space within Jiu-Jitsu?"

Asked live at the GBF Panel, Gracie Barra Leader Con 2026

Gracie Barra's mission has always been Jiu-Jitsu for Everyone. GBF exists because "everyone" only means something if every woman who walks onto a Gracie Barra mat finds a space built with her in mind, not one she has to adapt herself to fit.

The answers our panel gave weren't polished talking points. They were real stories about early classes with one woman in the room, about instructors who had to learn as they went, and about how much faster that space grew once women started teaching other women. This Special Class is what happens when that conversation leaves the stage and comes back to the mats.

A Community That Grows By Passing It On

Gracie Barra's oldest principle is Growing Together, Not Apart. Here is what that looks like for the women of GB Oceania.

1

A Student Shows Up

She might be new to the mats or years into her Jiu-Jitsu. Either way, she trains today alongside women who have already walked the path she's on.

2

A Senior Sister Teaches

Our female black belt Professors lead the technical session, not as a favour, but because Development means passing on exactly what was passed to them.

3

Sparring Builds Trust

Rolling with women at every stage, white belt to black belt, is how confidence stops being a talking point and starts being a felt experience.

4

She Becomes The Next Mentor

Every Professor on our panel started as a Student with a question. The cycle only continues if today's newer Students are given the same reason to stay and one day teach.

Two Of The Women Leading This Class

This is what the cycle above looks like in practice. Both trained for years before they started teaching others.

Prof Giuliana Kleina
Black Belt
ICP · WWCC

9 years training in Jiu-Jitsu, Prof Giuliana leads the GBF Women's Only Program at Gracie Barra Headquarters, Sydney. She holds a degree in psychology, which shapes how she reads what a student actually needs in the moment, technically and emotionally.

"A woman doesn't need to shrink herself to belong on this mat. My job is to build a room where she can grow in skill and in confidence at the same time, and where both count as real progress."

Prof Giuliana Kleina, Black Belt

Tami Mutran
Black Belt 1st Degree
Cert IV Fitness · Dip. Sports Coaching

Training consistently since 2012 and coaching since 2019, Tami has watched Jiu-Jitsu build confidence in kids, purpose in adults, and stronger communities around every school she's taught at.

"Jiu-Jitsu changed my life when I needed it most, it's part of who I am now. Watching a student grow on the mats, and carry that into the rest of her life, is why I still love doing this."
